Why the dealer is usually the expensive route
A dealership will replace your car key after you tow the vehicle to them and leave it. Two costs there are avoidable: the tow, and the markup on the key blank. We come to the vehicle and do the work where it sits — a driveway, a street, a workplace lot, a parking garage — which removes the tow entirely and is usually well below dealer pricing before you count it.
There is a genuine exception and we would rather state it than discover it at your car. A small number of very recent vehicles restrict security access to the dealer network — Mercedes from the FBS4 generation is the clearest case, and Tesla does not use conventional keys at all. Cutting is the easy half
Effectively every vehicle you are likely to be driving has an immobiliser — they have been required on new vehicles sold in Canada since September 2007 and were widespread well before. A chip in the key exchanges a coded signal with the car, and without that exchange the engine cranks and will not fire.
This is why a key cut at a hardware store or a kiosk opens the door, turns the ignition, and leaves you stationary. The cutting is straightforward; programming to the immobiliser is what requires the equipment and the authorised access.
Proof of ownership, every time
Making a working key to a vehicle is precisely the capability a car thief needs. We verify ownership before originating any key — vehicle registration or ownership in your name plus matching photo identification, or business documentation where the vehicle is registered to a company.
Any locksmith willing to skip that check is one you should be wary of, and not only on principle: it is the same check that protects your vehicle from someone else.
A spare now costs a fraction of an emergency later
Duplicating from a working key is a routine cut-and-program. Originating a key when every key is gone requires ownership verification, code retrieval or lock decoding, and a longer programming procedure that on many makes carries a manufacturer-imposed security wait nothing can shorten.
The price difference is a multiple, not a margin — and the second scenario always happens at the worst possible moment. If you own a vehicle with only one key, this is worth dealing with on a quiet afternoon.

How much does a replacement car key cost?
It depends almost entirely on the key type. A basic mechanical key for an older vehicle is at the very low end. A transponder or remote head key is mid-range. A proximity smart key for a recent luxury vehicle is at the top, because the blank itself is expensive and the programming takes longer. In nearly all cases we come in below dealership pricing, and we can quote accurately on the phone if you give us the year, make and model.
Can you program a key fob I bought online?
Yes, and it often saves money. Send us the FCC ID and part number before you order and we will confirm it is right for your exact vehicle — a fob that looks identical can use a different frequency and will not program. Also note that some makes only accept new, never-paired fobs, so a used one from a marketplace may be locked to a previous vehicle and unusable.
Why does my new key turn but the car will not start?
The key was cut but not programmed to the immobiliser. Mechanically it is a perfect key — it works the lock and turns the ignition barrel. Electronically the vehicle does not recognise it and refuses to authorise fuel and spark. It needs programming, which we can do on site.
How much does a push-to-start key cost to replace?
Meaningfully more than a conventional key, because the fob blank itself is expensive — and considerably more again on recent European and luxury vehicles. We are still typically well below dealer pricing, and we come to the vehicle, so for most makes there is no tow. Give us the year, make and model for an accurate figure.
I lost every key to my car. Do I need a tow to the dealership?
Almost certainly not. We originate keys on site for the large majority of makes and years — from code through authorised channels, or by decoding the lock directly — then program to the immobiliser at the vehicle, so for most cars there is no tow. For a small number of very recent vehicles the dealer is the only route, and we will tell you that on the phone rather than charging you for a visit that cannot succeed.

The price depends on the vehicle and on where you are in the GTA. We give you an estimate on the phone; when the final price can only be set on site, the technician tells you the price before starting any work.
My child or pet is locked in the car in Toronto. Who do I call?
Call 911 now. Then call us at (365) 361-5553 and say a child or a pet is inside. If there is any sign of distress, or the car is sitting in the sun, do not wait for a locksmith — emergency services will break a window if they have to.
My key will not turn in the ignition. What is wrong?
Try the steering lock first — if the wheel is under tension against the lock pin, the key cannot rotate. Apply firm pressure to the wheel in the direction that relieves the tension while turning the key. That resolves a large share of these calls in under a minute. If it does not, the cylinder is likely worn, has debris in it, or has a broken wafer, and it needs attention.
Can a broken key be removed without damaging the lock?
In the large majority of cases, yes — extraction tools are made for exactly this and the lock is unaffected. The damage usually comes from what was tried first. Glue is the worst offender because it bonds the fragment to the internals and turns a ten-minute job into a cylinder replacement.
Is it cheaper to get a spare key made now than after losing my only key?

Can a locksmith make a motorcycle key?
A specialist can, and we do. It takes a machine capable of cutting internal-track keyways, which many motorcycle manufacturers use and which most locksmiths do not carry, plus programming equipment for immobiliser-equipped bikes. That combination is why riders are so often sent to the dealer by default.
Can all our fleet vans use the same key?
On many makes, yes, and for trades and delivery operations it removes real daily friction. The consideration is that any driver can then open any vehicle, which suits some operations and is unacceptable to others. We will talk it through against how you actually run before doing it.
